Madiba Consult supports the Peace Process in South Sudan

24.10.2018: On behalf of the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Madiba Consult supported the "Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission" in the South Sudan Peace Process from 24 to 26 October 2018. In that time, its activities were planned until 2022. A workshop was moderated in Entebbe Uganda.

South Sudan has been independent since mid-2011. Nevertheless, an armed conflict broke out at the end of 2013 between the supporters of President Salva Kiir and the supporters of his former vice-president, Riek Machar. In August 2015, after several months of negotiations, a peace agreement was signed, the agreement to resolve the conflict in the Republic of South Sudan.

The agreement formulates numerous measures to resolve the conflict and to introduce comprehensive political reforms. The agreement established the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC).

JMEC monitors and supports the implementation of the peace process. The Commission is composed of 32 members and reports to the East African community of states IGAD. The members of JMEC represent important South Sudanese interest groups as well as international partners and friends of South Sudan. They are regional guarantors of peace in South Sudan.
